The Department of Arabic, Pookoya Thangal Memorial Govt. College is one of the oldest centres of studying and teaching Arabic in the State of Kerala. The department began functioning from 1978 and it became a full-fledged one by the commencement of BA Degree Course in Arabic Language & Literature in 1991. In 2001, it was elevated to the P.G. Department under the University of Calicut. The department has been recognised as Research Centre for research works in Arabic Language and Literature in 2018.

• The social history of Kerala during 1970’s is particularly charecterised by the beginning of imigration to the Gulf states seeking better employment opportunities.

• The traditional Arabic studies which was prevailed and practised in the erstwhile Malabar were more or less concentrated on religious instructions.

• During those days, to make use of the employment possibilities in gulf states the working knowledge of Modern Arabic has become an essential factor and hence the visionaries of education in Kerala during those days wished to start imparting instruction in Arabic along with the very inception of the College itself.

• This was behind the commencement of Department of Arabic in the year 1972 for uplifting of the socially and educationally backward community in and around the erstwhile Ernad Taluk.

•  Department conducted a talk On “Employability of Learning Arabic”on 19/10/22
•  The department conducted a one day workshop pn Ruqa Script on 26/10/22
•  As part of the activities of Arability Finishing School PSC One time Registration
  Drive conducted on 28/10/22
• Different type of competitons were conducted in connection withFIFA World Cup
  2022 under the banner of Arabic Association (Prediction Contest,Collage Making,Shoot Out, Quiz, Drawing competition)
• Digital and non digital logo designing competition for Arability conducted on 2/12/22
• Conducted Group Profile Display competition under Arability

Achievements of the department During the Academic year 2022-23

• Ali Nishad from 2020-21 degree pass out batch had got the scholarship of the CM Kerala of one lakh Rupees for the Brilliant degree students.
• Muhammed Mukhthar PT,Ummusalma PP,Shahana K,Arshida UK,Thabsima VT Mufeeda E Arbas Shafeeda of PG 2022-24 Batch and Haneena of third year UG
  have Qualified K TET Exam February 2022.
• Mahshook Hassan K(first Rank)Saneer KC(second Rank)Hiba Nasrin KK (Third
  Rank) Kadeeja KP(Eleventh Rank).
• The department got First Prize in Patriotic song.

• Muhammed Roshan of Second BA Arabic got first Prize in Body Building Competition conducted at Palakkad.
